Chapter 12

Andy

Something is extremely wrong.

Elle had completely disconnected from me. The past two days, she was quiet and withdrawn. Whenever I asked her what was going on, she shrugged, said she was fine and then went back to staring into space.

I’d been looking forward to the weekend since the work week started. Now that it had arrived, everything felt slightly off. Whatever Elle was keeping to herself it bothered me.

What is she hiding?

I didn’t want to think like that, but it was impossible not to believe that something was going on.

I stared at the paperwork in front of me, but it might as well have been written in Latin. The words all cluttered together and mixed until nothing made sense to me. I laid them down on my desk and pushed myself up in search of coffee. I hadn’t slept great the night before because my mind kept wandering to Elle.

If it was something really important, she would tell me. Right?

I wanted to believe that was true, but Elle had a way of shutting down and cutting people off. I’d witnessed that so many times since we were younger that I’d lost count. It was hard to reach her when she pulled away so I had to tread carefully.

“Andy, can you come with me to check on things?” Oscar asked as he popped his head in. “I want to go over some of the plans before we start drilling in a new spot.”

I nodded. “Yeah. Let me grab my cup.”

I filled up my travel mug and followed him out of the office. His truck was waiting and took us to the site which wasn’t far away. Oscar talked my ear off the whole time, but I was on another planet. He nudged me with his elbow and glared.

“You’re not paying attention.”

“I am,” I said quickly as I sipped at the coffee in my mug. “I heard everything.”

Oscar folded his arms over his chest. “What did I just say?”

I searched my brain for the answer, but came up blank. What the hell had Oscar been saying? All I could think about was Elle and getting back home to her to figure out what was going on.

He sipped at his mug as his boss raised a thick brow. Finally, he sighed.

“Okay, I have no idea. Sorry. My head is all over.”

“What’s going on with you? One day you’re happy and excited and now you’re completely disconnected.”

I rubbed the back of my neck. “I’m sorry. I’m just… thinking about Elle.”

“I thought things were going well between the two of you.”

“I thought so too. Now all of a sudden she’s pulling back and I don’t know what’s going on with her.”

Oscar frowned. “She’s been stuck in your apartment for a while, right?”

I nodded. “Yeah. Her ankle is finally getting back to where it needs to be but she just stays in all day. I don’t want her to start doing shit and injure it all over again.”

“That’s commendable, but she’s got to be bored by now.
